Choosing food that supports self-love

Jean DavyJean Davy completed a five-year apprenticeship through the East Sydney Technical College, finishing a Trade Commercial Cookery Course. Jean won the Apprentice of the Year three times and the overall Apprentice of the Year three times. Her apprenticeship was through the Royal North Shore Hospital. Jean thrived at North Shore — the catering team of dieticians always supported the use of fresh whole foods, and everything was freshly prepared from scratch. Their passion for excellent produce and ingredients inspired Jean to continue working with whole and chemical free foods, making this her life’s work.

At North Shore, being such a large commercial kitchen, Jean was able to work from one section to another, including special diets, which became her passion. Before opening Allerjean Café, her career included the operation and owning of a restaurant, coffee shop and Judges Dining Room in the Supreme Law Court Building in Sydney. Jean’s career then took a new direction, which led to her cooking for clients with severe allergies, including anaphylaxis, and also for children with diabetes and food intolerances.

At this time, Jean met her now dear friends Mandy, Sally and Rachael. Sally was five years old and suffering with severe food intolerances and many other health problems, including leaky gut, SLE, chemical sensitivities and early signs of Crohns Disease. Mandy and Rachael also had moderate food intolerances. Jean was able to create and supply the girls with a wider range of edible, great tasting food that they could actually eat and enjoy, giving them variety for the first time in their day-to-day lives.

Jean in her commercial kitchenJean opened the Allerjean Café in December 2002, dedicating the Café to Sally to remind her of what was needed by Sally and other people like her in the world. The Café served quality organic, whole foods, produced from scratch. Allerjean catered not only to people with food allergies and food intolerances, but also to people who choose to eat food that enhances their soul and well-being. From this, the Café grew and evolved and won the Manly Daily Business Award two years in a row. After winding up the Allerjean Cafe, Jean turned her expertise to creating wholefood base packet mixes. The packets were created so that people had a choice of the level of nutrition they wished. Jean's new range of packet mixes enable you to make these products in your home.

Jean is now studying nutrition and herbal medicine and has written a recipe book to help people to cook a wider variety of interesting food, so that they focus on the foods that they can have, not on what they can’t have. Jean is now enjoying teaching cooking and has learned and understands that when she teaches, she is the one learning.
